CHARACTER
Name: Ginko.
True Name: Ginko.
Canon: Mushi-shi (after the final chapter, the Sound of Bells)
Age: Likely 34. That’s the age he’ll claim, anyway.
History: Ginko wiki page
A quick explanation of some of the things I talk about in this app will probably be needed, as the wiki is a bit sparse.
Mushi: magical germ- or bug-like creatures that exist everywhere in the world. They do a variety of things, just like the bacteria in our world, and many of them are perfectly harmless. They are all perfectly natural, but when they decide to prey on humans, due to circumstances or simply their nature, that’s when you need a mushishi.
Mushishi: a folk doctor of sorts whose speciality is treating mushi ailments. Most of the treatments are folk remedies, more or less, even if they work.
Rule of Nature: nebulous beings. They seem to govern over the mushi in some way, and they choose to do certain things with their powers. They are all-powerful over nature, but seem to be less able to deal with humans without certain circumstances.
River of life/light: a river of eerie yellow-green light that flows deep underground. The mushi gain their power from it. Where it flows close to the surface, life flourishes; where it recedes, life withers. If you look at it too long it can burn your eyes. If you step into it, you will stop existing as a single being and become part of the flow.
Powers/Abilities:
-He can see in the dark, even on totally moonless nights or in a cave. His vision isn’t quite good enough to read anything without additional light, it’s more like how a normal human might be able to see at night during the height of the full moon.
-He can close his ‘second eyelid’--which is exactly what it sounds like, you close your eyes and then you close them again. While canon is terribly unclear about what exactly happens here, it seems to be a way to almost astrally project your soul or consciousness into another realm, but instead of into a dimension somewhere above us, you go deep underground. Ginko does this to check on the river of light/life that flows through the land and also he has (unintentionally) done it on occasion to meet with the Rule of Nature. Literally any human can close their second eyelid, if they can figure out how; it’s seemingly quite easy. It’s just not a great idea, for most.
-I’m not sure this counts for the game or how it would translate, but he attracts mushi in his world. This is a natural ability that he can’t turn off; it’s like his natural vibrations call out to the mushi and make them think he’s one of them. It’s the reason he can never stay in one place.
-He can also see said mushi, something that not very many people can. This does not translate to seeing ghosts or any other supernatural thing that isn’t related to mushi; this power is very specifically geared toward mushi alone.
-Finally, his left eye is missing entirely and has been replaced by a patch of the tokoyami mushi that ate his name and memories when he was a child. It does nothing besides exist in his eye; he once thought it was what was attracting mushi to him, but that is not the case. His encounter with the tokoyami is no doubt what gave him his ability to see in the dark, but I don’t think this bit of dark mushi continuing to exist in his eye socket is the reason he has that power. The mushi reacted exactly once, when he attempted to step into the river of light as a child knowing what would happen to him. It responded (by causing him so much pain in that eye he couldn’t keep walking) to keep him and itself alive, or so Ginko assumed at the time.
-I forgot to add this I am so sorry, he can also throw needles with surprising accuracy for a one-eyed man, and also he can sew.
Inventory: He has his medicine box on him at most times, even keeping it near him while he sleeps. It looks rather like a boxy wooden backpack, and it’s sturdy enough for him to sit on as a makeshift seat if he likes. Its inside is full of small drawers to keep various items in.
Inside the medicine box he usually carries:
-empty bottles
-full bottles (usually of poisons or various medical liquids)
-a small jar of light-river water (if he’s not allowed to keep this he will just have an empty jar)
-various herbs (dried) used for medicines and for making his mushi cigarettes
-several mushi cigarettes (herbal cigarettes that do nothing but make his body inhospitable to the mushi, to help prevent him from getting sick)
-some bandaging
-maps of several parts of Japan. They mark various walking trails, paths of the light-river, homes of the ‘gods’ that guard various mountains and rivers, as well as whatever else Ginko has chosen to write on them.
-some scrolls picturing and talking about a few random mushi
-blank paper, some brushes, a small inkstone, a partially used ink stick and a couple of new ones
-a strange cocoon. It has seemingly no purpose since the creature inside of it has mysteriously vanished (mushishi mail system)
-a drawer of seemingly random clippings of hair, nails, and various mineral chunks tied up in paper wraps, as well as other random bric a brac. Part of his folk medicine schtick.
-a flint and iron
-a small bamboo wood box lined with straw, containing matches
-an extra change of clothes (shirt, pants, all the things you need. No socks)
-a large gauzy sheet almost like mosquito netting
-a small blanket
-a medium-sized knife in a wooden sheath
-some dried food and a small jar for water, partly full
He is also wearing the clothes on his back: a dark blue trench coat-like coat, a long sleeved shirt, trousers, shoes, etc. No socks.
Job History:
-Mushishi: specifically, someone who wanders the land and takes care of unusual ailments. Different from a doctor, though due to his mushishi work and his close association with an actual doctor, he probably knows what he’s talking about most of the time. This has been his job for his entire life, basically as far back as he can remember.
-Peddler: someone who sells anything from folk cures, folk cures that actually work, and fake items he sells to gullible peasants. Some of it works, some of it doesn’t; if anyone has any complaints, he’s long gone by the time they do. His side hustle when the mushishi work is thin on the ground.
Suppressions: A strong desire to connect to other people, knowing he always has to leave them behind. The fact that he can’t remember his childhood still bothers him, but he tries not to dwell on it. His greatest desire is buried down so deep he never consciously thinks about it, but it’s still there. The worry that maybe he can’t be loved, and the knowledge that he can never let himself try.
Greatest Fear: Being fully blind/unable to see in some way. A close second would be losing any more of his memories.
Greatest Desire: He secretly wants to settle down and have a home, and a normal life. Maybe even a family.
Greatest Regret: He has, on two occasions, turned people into things more or less than human. Once, a woman needed to become a mushi – for her grandson’s happiness, due to the meddling of the Rule, and for her own desires. He regretted that, afterward. He also made a man seemingly immortal, but that’s more a regret in the sense that if he ever gets found out, bad consequences would happen to him.
